This would reflect broad philosophies in mental health and psychotherapy with emphasis on intervention, diagnosis and management in the provision of mental health support. We will also explore the use of medication and psychotherapy as treatment interventions within a relational approach. There are significant changes in conceptualising diagnosis and intervention as indicated in the development process for International Classification of Diseases (ICD11) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V). Bodywork in Therapy
(Commences: 22/10/2011)
Whilst working as a therapist you may have experienced how yours and your clients’ bodies often seem to have responses that are linked to the thoughts, images and feelings that are being expressed, but have felt uncertain as to how to work further with them. This workshop will aim to provide an introduction to some of the main theoretical principles underlying the interconnectedness of body and mind, explaining how our system is always trying to protect and regulate itself, and what happens on a physical level if we experience trauma. There will be opportunities to experiment with our own general body-awareness, as well as explore specific areas such as boundaries and the safe use of touch, grounding, support, ease and flow, and the role of our breathing in all these areas. By the end of this short introduction, participants should have the understanding and confidence to use certain strategies and techniques usefully and safely with their clients, and the opportunity to deepen their knowledge with further courses, should they so wish. Janet Hills has worked as a therapist for over 15 years and teaches counselling at the University of Nottingham. She holds the Diploma in Bodywork, following training at the Chiron Centre for Body Psychotherapy, and has done additional training in Hakomi, (a form of body-centered, somatic psychotherapy developed by Ron Kurtz in the 1970s). The cost of the two day workshop is £125 for members, £140 for non-members.

Working with Addiction, an Integrative Approach. A One-Day Workshop
(Commences: 30/07/2011)
In the field of addiction treatment options for specialised training are limited. Our approach seeks to redress this by harnessing the potential evidenced in the therapeutic relationship. We have condensed 16 years of working relationally into a series of core themes. Many people who have reached the point of abstinence need ongoing support to realise their potential in a world without alcohol/drugs. We believe that whilst everyone’s experience is unique, there are common themes that arise when working with people who have developed a relationship with substances. Awareness of these themes can improve the therapeutic relationship, inform the work and support therapist’s wellbeing. Our one day workshop is designed with both professional and personal development in mind. Participants will be encouraged to explore relationally some of the common themes identified within the addiction process in order to inform their practice. Our approach is relational and underpinned by Integrative Psychotherapeutic theory. Course Facilitators Dave Greaves - UKCP registered Integrative Psychotherapist with over 10 years experience of working with people and services in the addiction field. Dave facilitates therapeutic group work and works individually within the field of addiction. He has a private psychotherapy practice and works as a counsellor for the NHS. Dave also works as a musician. Kathleen Carroll - Senior Social Work Practitioner, qualified counsellor and Gestalt Psychotherapist in advanced training. Kathleen worked as a field Social Worker for over 10 years before specialising in Childrens Rights. She currently works as an independent Social Worker and as a staff counsellor. Andrew Ryan - UKCP registered Integrative Psychotherapist with over seven years experience working with people and services in the addiction field. Andrew has extensive experience working individually and within a group setting. Andrew has a private psychotherapy practice and is currently researching the importance of relationship in the treatment of substance abuse. The possibilities and potential of qualitative research
(Commences: 26/06/2010)
Facilitator: Dr Linda Finlay As psychotherapists, we are increasingly exhorted to draw on evidence-based practice and to do research to provide evidence of the effectiveness of our work. Yet what kind of research should we do? What research would help us develop our own practice and simultaneously enhance our professional profile? My answer to these questions is to suggest that we engage in research that is resonant and relational; research that captures the richness, meanings and ambiguity of lived experience. This workshop offers a practical introduction to qualitative research methodology. We will explore how our clinical skills and interests are directly transferable to the research domain (for example, interviewing, empathy and intuitive interpretation). We will also discuss ways psychotherapists new to research can undertake small-scale research that is relevant to practice. I would like to share my own enthusiasm for qualitative research as a 'voyage of discovery' with all its excitements, challenges and unknowing. 65 pounds

"YOU CAN F***K OFF" and other teenage defences. Working with teenagers: the school as a therapeutic context
(Commences: 13/02/2010)
Young people spend several hours per day for many years in school. Therefore, schools are ideally placed to meet learners' emotional, as well as learning, needs. At its best, a school with a therapeutic dimension can support young people to manage or overcome social, emotional or behavioural issues, so that learning becomes a fulfilling opportunity. At its worst, school exacerbates, confirms and compounds the young person's poor self-regard, acting out behaviours, feelings of anger, anxiety and shame and lack of trust in adults. This two-day workshop seeks to explore how therapy in an educational setting can enhance and support teenagers to engage in learning and 'nudge' the school to meet their pupils' emotional needs. The workshop will also be of interest to therapists working with adults who have had a difficult experience of school in the past. Facilitator: Lydia Noor trained originally as a teacher and had over twenty years experience as a teacher and head teacher before training in Integrative Psychotherapy. She has a commitment to the potential of education as a containing and transforming experience. Her current work includes individual therapeutic work with adults, work with adolescents in schools and in private practice and supervision in the school context. She also provides training in Relational Emotional Literacy for schools. Cost: 125 pounds
